CYBERCASTLE by Syd Mead: This was a gouache illustration done for a client who was going to use as an art direction and modeling guide to model a three-dimensional web site opening scene.
I’ve been wanting to make a few posts on artists that I find inspiring and I thought it would be great to start with Syd Mead.
Syd Mead (Sydney Jay Mead) is a concept artist, self-defined as “visual futurist”, who worked for car companies and movies such as Tron (1980), Blade Runner (1980), Timecop (1994), Mission to Mars (2000), Mission: Imposible III (2005) and, more recently, Elysium (2013) among others.
If you are interested in learning more about him, click on the image at the top (Cybercastle) to go to his biography in his official website. Unfortunately, his website focuses on his latest illustrations but here is some of his earlier work that I really love:
U.S. Steel Hovering Station Wagon from Syd Mead’s book sentinel. – From the U.S. Steel book Concepts … a family outing with an air-ground-effect station wagon on a road bordered by an electronic guidance fence.
Syd Mead: U.S. Steel Interface – a portfolio of probabilities, 1969 – Residential City Modules – In the domestic scene above, Mead presents his design for a residence built with steel post and beam modules with a cast ornamental frame visible just inside the building.
Innovari High Performance Coupe, concept artwork Mead created for the U.S. Steel book Innovations (1968). From Syd Mead’s book Sentinel. – In the performance-oriented coupe above, Mead takes full advantage of the opportunity to display steel trim items around the glass, lights, wheel assemblies and exhaust system. The illustration is capped by a unique Mead touch – the little boy’s incredible pet.
